Turning 50 is a big deal. It deserves more than a booked-out restaurant and a taxi home by eleven.
Here’s a better idea. Get everyone you love under one roof for a whole weekend, in the heart of the Lake District. Your own house. Your own hot tub. Your own cinema. Nobody has to leave, nobody has to whisper, and the party ends when you say it does.
We’ve hosted hundreds of milestone birthdays at The Terrace over the years — 30ths, 40ths, 50ths, 60ths, 70ths. This is everything we’ve learned about doing a 50th properly.
Why a big house beats a hotel
A hotel gives you a function room, a bar bill for fifty people, and everyone scattering to their rooms at the end of the night. A whole house gives you the run of the place — and the whole weekend, not just the Saturday.
Cook together in the kitchen. Fall about laughing over the dinner table. Pile into the cinema in your pyjamas. Sit in the hot tub as the sun goes down, putting the world to rights. That’s the stuff people still talk about years later — the amazing memories don’t come from a function room.
And you’re in Windermere village, right in the heart of the Lake District — the UK’s adventure playground. Pubs, restaurants and Booths supermarket are all a short walk downhill.
Pick your house
The five Terrace houses sit together in one Grade II listed row, designed by Augustus Pugin — the man behind the Palace of Westminster — and all of them are a couple of minutes’ walk from Windermere station, so guests coming by train have no excuse.
Every house comes with a 75-inch cinema room, a 7-seat hot tub, cosy kitchen, Chesterfield sofas, and plenty of off-road parking. All linen included. EV chargers on site. The differences are in the character.
Number One — the flagship. Sleeps 14, with a 15-seat cinema, a private bar in the hallway, a bright red 4-oven AGA and dining for 22.
White Moss — warm and versatile. Sleeps 12, with an AGA kitchen, hot tub and cinema. Ideal if your party’s a touch smaller but you still want the works.
Alice Howe — sleeps 14 in 7 en-suite bedrooms, including two four-poster rooms. Open fires, a wood-burning stove, a cellar cinema and a covered hot tub. The one for a birthday with a bit of grandeur.
Boston House — built for groups who want everything. 7 bedrooms, 7 en-suites, a cellar cinema, a hot tub in its own private walled courtyard, and a kitchen island that seats 8 while the cooking’s going on.
Bannerrigg — the biggest and most characterful. Sleeps 16, with an 18-seat cellar cinema, an oak dining table for 18, an AGA, and all single beds — so nobody has to share unless they want to.
More than 16 of you? The houses sit side by side, so you can book two or more together — take all five and you can sleep 71 guests on the same terrace. Grandparents in one, the rowdy table in another.
Friday: arrival night
Check-in is 4pm. Get the cars unpacked, claim your bedrooms, stick the music on.
Do your big shop at Booths in the village — or better, order your wine before you arrive from Kevin at Windermere Wine Stores, a 3-minute walk away. Our guests get 10% off pre-orders and he delivers to the house. Fizz in the fridge before the first guest arrives. Sorted.
Keep Friday night simple. A big pan of something easy, or a drop-off meal from a local caterer. Then christen the hot tub. You’ve got all weekend — pace yourselves.
Saturday: the big day
Start with breakfast at the house. A full English on the go, coffee brewing, everyone drifting down in their own time while the birthday girl or boy gets a lie-in. It’s half the point of having your own kitchen.
Then get out into the Lakes. A gentle option: the Orrest Head walk, about 20 minutes to the top, with panoramic views over Lake Windermere — it was Wainwright’s first Lake District walk. The brave option: a swim in the lake at Miller Ground. There’s nothing like cold water for making 50 feel young.
For the birthday dinner, bring the restaurant to you. Lucy’s Inside Out cook regularly at our houses, or book a private chef through Yhangry — our guests save £50 with the code THETERRACEW. You get restaurant food, your own table, and no taxi at the end of the night. If you’d rather be pampered first, Michelle and her team come to the house for massages and facials.
After dinner, the house does the work. Speeches at the table, then a last soak in the hot tub before it winds down at 10pm. From there, pile into the cinema — a film, or the slideshow of embarrassing old photos — where the night can run as late as you like.
Sunday: the slow one
Here’s a tip from 19 years of watching groups do this. Plenty of parties head home on Sunday out of habit — and the Sunday night usually only adds around £150–200 to the whole booking. That’s about 6%. Split between the group, it’s the price of a round. Stay.
Because Sunday is the day hotels can’t give you. Bacon butties, papers, dogs by the fire. Stretch your legs around the village, then book Sunday lunch at The Lamplighter, two minutes away — they do private dining if you want the table to yourselves. Back to the house for one more film and one more soak. Nobody’s watching the clock.
Check-out is 10am Monday. We’d love you to be out by then — housekeeping arrive on the dot — but you’ll have had three full nights of it by then.
The practical bits
Weekend breaks start on a Friday, arriving from 4pm — two or three nights, your call. Bring the dogs — they’re very welcome here. There’s just a small charge per dog added at checkout. One thing worth knowing: the house is for your booked group only, so make sure everyone who’s celebrating is on the guest list from the start.

FAQs
How many people can we bring?
Individual houses sleep 12 to 16. Book neighbouring houses together and you can get up to 71 guests across all five.
Can we hire caterers or a private chef?
Yes — guests arrange it directly. Lucy’s Inside Out and Yhangry both know our houses well, and Yhangry gives our guests £50 off with the code THETERRACEW. Drop-off meals are an option too.
Do all the houses have hot tubs?
All five Terrace houses have 7-seat hot tubs. Our two Orrest Head properties don’t — worth knowing if you’re comparing. One ask: we’d like everyone out of the hot tub by 10pm. After that, the cinema’s the place to be anyway.
Can we get a supermarket delivery?
Yes — Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda all deliver regularly to the properties. Book a slot for just after 4pm on arrival day and the big shop does itself. Booths in the village covers anything you’ve forgotten.
Can we bring the dogs?
Up to 4 dogs, very welcome, with a small charge per dog at checkout.
Are decorations and banners allowed?
A 50th needs balloons. Just ask us first about what you’re planning and where it’s going up, and leave the walls as you found them.
Do you offer 2-night weekend breaks?
Yes, but our advice is to add the Sunday night. It takes all the pressure off Sunday evening — no packing while the party’s still going — and that’s true even if you don’t use it.
Do you offer a late check-out on a Sunday?
Yes — but it’s not much cheaper than adding the third night, because it pushes our cleaners back to Monday anyway. For a little more you keep the house for the whole evening and Monday morning too. Take the night.
When can we arrive and leave?
Check-in from 4pm, check-out by 10am. Weekend stays start on Fridays, mid-week stays on Mondays.
Fifty only happens once. Do it somewhere worth remembering.
